In the Chair - Real People Real Hair - Lizzie

Lizzie was a bit overwhelmed by her hair. She called it a lion's mess, as opposed to a lion's mane, which was a shame as she had great quality hair, but it didn't benefit from the simplistic one-step long Bob she came in with. It blanketed her shoulders in a mass of tired frizzy hair, making her feel overwhelmed and de-energized.

Cut well, her hair would look great with little effort. We agreed to keep the length at the back but remove much of the weight that was dragging her down.

1. The Haircut

Using our signature Diamond Dry Cut method, I kept the length at the back and graduated up to just below chin length at the front. Then layered up from the baseline to blend in the chunky step at the back so the hair fell and moved more fluidly.

2. Colour

We didn't colour Lizzie's hair today but the haircut alone brightened and improved the colour enormously. This is partly by removing the worst of the flat dull dry ends and also the dimensional effect that the layering gives the hair. Instead of looking at a flat sheet of colour the layers create a real and illusory dynamic of tonal dimension.

3. Condition

Lizzie has a fantastic quality of hair: thick, wavy and mostly supple and she just needs to look after it to keep it at its best. A key product for Lizzie's hair is LifeSaver Pre-wash Treatments. These aren't oil-based treatments, and you can’t overuse LifeSaver®. They feed, hydrate, repair and strengthen hair without weighing it down and give vibrancy to all hair types. Regular use means less thinning, less breakage and fewer splits ends.

4. Styling

NEW Eureka Blowdry Balm is the best choice for styling Lizzie's hair. Just apply, comb and style, or not if you like the natural look. This product eliminates frizz and defines the waves whilst protecting the hair from UV and heat damage. The Cashmere Protein Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner also helps soften the hair and give shine.

We used a little Thicker Quicker at the roots and a large round brush helped smooth the hair for an effortlessly groomed look. Once dried, we fed through a little Magic Oil to define the layers, give texture and shine.

For a long time, the ‘Butterfly’ haircut reigned as the most requested style. But in 2025 and the early months of 2026, ‘Bobs’ took over, and we loved seeing Lily Collins, Ji-young Yoo and Kathy Bates embrace different versions of the trend. From French bobs to blunt cuts and box bobs, each of them wore the style beautifully.

Myths & Misunderstandings - Can I over-protein my hair?
Myths & Misunderstandings - Can I over-protein my hair?

Healthy hair is essentially 97% protein and 3% water. The protein provides the structural strength, the water gives flexibility and shine. Hair cannot be overloaded with protein but it can become so dehydrated with heat styling, colouring, and siliconised hair products that you end up losing the 3% water of fresh root hair, and then what is left of the shrunken hair towards the ends is 100% protein and too porous to hold moisture.
