Great hair doesn’t begin with the styling process, it begins with the true condition of the hair itself. At Michael Van Clarke, our LifeSaver Pre-wash Treatments are a key part in the Healthcare for Hair journey and were created to repair hair from within, not simply coat over damage temporarily.
We spoke to Michael about why pre-wash treatments matter, how hair actually absorbs the repair technology, and why silicone-free makes such a difference to long-term hair health.
Why a pre-wash treatment?
Traditional haircare often tries to improve the appearance of damage after it has already happened. A pre-wash treatment takes the opposite approach by helping defend and strengthen the hair before shampooing begins.
When hair is washed, particularly damaged or chemically treated hair, the cuticle lifts and the fibre becomes more fragile. LifeSaver Pre-wash Treatments prepare the hair in advance, helping support the internal structure so it copes better with washing, styling and everyday stress.
Applied to dry hair, the formula has the opportunity to absorb properly into the fibre where it’s needed most. Our unique cashmere proteins and Hydrabond Rx™ complex help replenish lost strength, improve flexibility and support healthier hair behaviour over time.
The result is hair that doesn’t just look smoother for a day, but gradually becomes stronger, glossier, softer and more resilient with continued use.
How do pre-wash treatments differ to a standard hair mask?
Many traditional masks focus primarily on surface conditioning. They smooth the outer layer of the hair to improve feel and manageability, but the effect is often cosmetic and short-lived, especially when silicones are involved.
A pre-wash treatment is designed to work far more deeply. Instead of simply coating the cuticle, LifeSaver treatments help replenish and reinforce the hair from within, targeting the areas where damage, dehydration and weakness actually occur.
Because the treatment is applied before shampooing, the active ingredients can absorb more effectively without competing against excess water already inside the hair shaft.
This creates a very different result. Hair feels naturally healthier, with improved movement, elasticity and shine, rather than artificially heavy or coated.
What makes the cashmere protein complex in LifeSaver so effective for the hair?
Hair becomes damaged when it loses moisture and protein through heat styling, colouring, UV exposure and everyday wear and tear. Over time, this leaves the hair weaker, rougher, less flexible and more prone to breakage.

The LifeSaver treatments were developed to help restore and protect the condition of the hair itself, rather than simply coating over damage temporarily. At the heart of the formulas is our Hydrabond Rx™ complex combined with hydrolysed cashmere proteins.
Cashmere proteins are particularly effective because their structure is very similar to human hair molecules. Proteins in their natural form are too large for the hair to absorb, so we break them down through hydrolysis into much smaller amino-acid chains that can penetrate more effectively into damaged areas of the hair fibre.
These lightweight amino-acids help support weakened areas, improve moisture retention and restore softness, shine and flexibility without heaviness or build-up.
Many traditional products rely on silicone to create temporary smoothness and gloss on the surface of the hair. Whilst this can make hair feel softer initially, the underlying condition often remains dry and fragile.
LifeSaver works differently by helping strengthen and support the hair from within, so it gradually becomes naturally healthier, shinier and more resilient with continued use, feeling soft, fluid and full of movement.
Why is silicone-free haircare so important?
Silicones are commonly used in haircare because they give an immediate feeling of smoothness, shine and control. The problem is that this effect is often cosmetic rather than restorative.
Over time, silicone builds up on the surface of the hair, creating a waterproof coating that can block moisture and beneficial ingredients from properly penetrating the fibre. Hair may feel silky initially, but underneath it can become increasingly dry, dehydrated and fragile.
This build-up can also leave hair heavy, flat and more difficult to manage, often creating a cycle where more silicone-based products are needed just to maintain the appearance of smoothness.
At Van Clarke, we believe healthy hair should feel naturally soft, glossy and resilient without being artificially coated. That’s why the entire LifeSaver range is completely silicone-free.
Instead of masking damage temporarily, the treatments work to improve the actual condition of the hair over time, allowing it to retain moisture better, behave more naturally and maintain long-term strength, movement and shine.
Who should be using a pre-wash treatment?
Everyone benefits from one, particularly if the hair is coloured, heat styled, frizzy, dry or prone to breakage. Even naturally healthy hair benefits from preventative repair, helping maintain strength, shine and elasticity before visible damage develops.
Think of it as skincare for your hair, consistent maintenance delivers the best long-term results.
How often should you use a LifeSaver treatment?
For most hair types, once a week delivers excellent results or at least every other shampoo. Very damaged, over-processed or dehydrated hair may benefit from more frequent use initially. But consistency is key. Hair health will improve progressively over time as the internal structure becomes stronger and more balanced.
What makes LifeSaver Original different?

What is unique about Deep Sleep?
LifeSaver Deep Sleep is an overnight treatment designed to work in harmony with the body’s natural recovery cycle while you sleep. The Hydrabond Rx™ complex and cashmere proteins work overnight to support dry, stressed and over-processed hair, leaving it softer, smoother and more manageable by morning.
What makes Deep Sleep especially unique is the calming blend of essential oils and comforting fragrance notes, carefully created to transform haircare into a more restorative evening ritual. The luxurious scent helps encourage relaxation whilst the treatment works overnight to restore softness, shine and condition.
Who should use Deep Sleep?
Deep Sleep is particularly loved by those who prefer washing and styling their hair in the morning, as the treatment can be easily applied before bed and left to work overnight.
It’s also perfect for anyone who enjoys turning their evening routine into a more luxurious ritual. The calming fragrance and essential oil blend creates a soothing bedtime experience, whilst you wake up to hair that feels softer, smoother and far more manageable.
What does Deep Sleep smell like?
Deep Sleep has a beautifully calming, aromatic fragrance created to turn your evening haircare routine into a relaxing bedtime ritual. Crafted with the artistry of perfumers in Grasse, the scent blends soothing essential oils including Egyptian Geranium and Lavender, chosen to help encourage deeper, better quality sleep whilst the treatment works overnight.
The fragrance combines notes of lavender, chamomile, rosemary, patchouli, petitgrain, clary sage and vetiver, layered with fresh citrus touches of mandarin, lime and lemon, alongside softer notes of tonka bean and lavandin. The result is a luxurious, spa-like scent that feels comforting, elegant and deeply restorative.
What makes LifeSaver Ultra different from the others?
LifeSaver Ultra Pre-wash Treatment contains double the concentration of the repairing Hydrabond Rx™ complex, making it the most intensive treatment in the range. It was created for hair that is severely damaged, highly processed or extremely fragile.
Who is Ultra best suited to?
Ultra is ideal for dehydrated, over-coloured, chemically stressed or heavily heat-damaged hair that needs serious reconstruction and strength. It’s often recommended when hair has lost elasticity and is prone to snapping or excessive splitting.
Can I use too much and over-protein my hair?
This is one of the biggest myths in haircare. Healthy hair is naturally made up of around 97% protein and 3% water, so the problem is not too much protein, but a lack of moisture and flexibility caused by damage, dehydration and poor-quality products.
With LifeSaver Ultra, the focus is on restoring balance to severely damaged hair using our hydrolysed cashmere proteins and Hydrabond Rx™ complex. The proteins are broken down into tiny amino-acid chains that are compatible with the hair structure and able to support weakened areas without creating stiffness or build-up.
What often gets mistaken for “too much protein” is actually hair that has become dry, brittle and overloaded with silicone coatings, preventing proper moisture retention. LifeSaver Ultra works differently by helping improve both strength and hydration, leaving hair softer, stronger and more flexible rather than hard, rigid or brittle.
