Salon Spotlight: The Truth about Shampoos

Beautiful hair always starts with the right foundation, and that means understanding how to shampoo properly and choosing the right one for your hair. Let’s talk to Michael about all things shampoo.

How important is shampoo in a haircare routine?
Shampoo is absolutely fundamental. In the salon, we know that if the scalp isn’t properly cleansed, nothing else works as it should. Shampoo removes oil, product build-up, and environmental residue, allowing the hair to behave properly and respond better to styling.

How do you choose the right shampoo for your hair type?
The key is to match your shampoo to both your hair condition and your scalp needs, not just what you’d like your hair to look like.

Fine Hair: Choose lightweight, volumising formulas that won’t weigh hair down
Dry or Damaged Hair: Look for hydrating and restorative shampoos
Coloured Hair: Use colour-protect shampoos to maintain tone and longevity
Oily Scalp: Opt for balancing or clarifying shampoos

In the salon, we always tailor this carefully, because the right shampoo makes styling easier and results longer-lasting.

How do you know if your shampoo is wrong for you?
Your hair will tell you. If it feels heavy or coated, looks dull, doesn’t hold a style, or the scalp feels irritated or becomes greasy too quickly, it’s not right. When the shampoo is correct, hair behaves effortlessly.

How often should you shampoo your hair?
It depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and routine. For most people, shampooing two or three times a week is sufficient, while finer or oilier hair may need more frequent washing. Some people like to wash their hair everyday which is fine if you’re using high quality products and don’t have an aggressive heat styling ritual.

What is the correct way to shampoo your hair?
This is where many people go wrong. In the salon, we follow a very precise method:

• Fully wet the hair before applying shampoo
• Use a small amount (around a 50p size, more for longer or thicker hair) and spread it across your palms
• Apply to the scalp and massage gently (not with nails)
• Focus on the hairline and nape where build-up collects
• Massage for at least 30 seconds
• Rinse thoroughly…and then rinse again

This ensures the scalp is properly cleansed without damaging the hair.

Should you shampoo twice?
If your hair has product build-up, excess oil, or pollution exposure, then yes. The first cleanse removes surface dirt; the second properly cleanses the scalp. If the hair is relatively clean, one wash is enough.

What are the most common shampoo mistakes?
Shampoo is designed to cleanse the scalp, not to be aggressively rubbed through the lengths. When used properly, it improves shine, manageability, and overall hair health.

How does shampoo affect long-term hair health?
Consistent, correct shampooing supports a healthy scalp environment, allowing hair to grow stronger. It also helps maintain proper moisture balance and improves overall manageability.

Is it true that washing your hair too often is damaging?
Not necessarily. If you’re using professional-quality products, regular shampooing isn’t the issue. Poor drying techniques and excessive heat styling are far more damaging. It’s about balance, cleansing without stripping.

How do I choose the right Van Clarke shampoo?
Within the Van Clarke range, each formula is targeted:

Volumising Shampoo – for fine or soft hair needing body
Moisturising Shampoo – for dry, coarse or frequently styled hair
UV Protective Shampoo – ideal for coloured hair
Silver Blonde Shampoo – for blondes or brunettes needing tone correction
Angelica Rose Shampoo – for hydration and shine with a luxury finish
Balancing Scalp Shampoo – for oil control and scalp health
Exfoliating Scalp Shampoo – for flaky or congested scalps
Original Volumising Shampoo – a classic body-building cleanser

Each one is designed to improve manageability and support long-term hair condition.

Why are Van Clarke shampoos silicone-free?
All our shampoos are silicone-free because silicones don’t treat the hair, they disguise it. They coat the hair with a film to create artificial smoothness, which builds up over time and dulls the hair. By avoiding silicones, the hair retains natural movement, shine, and strength without residue.

Should I be avoiding sulphates?
This is often misunderstood. Not all sulphates are the same. Our shampoos are SLS-free and use milder or naturally derived cleansers that balance effective cleansing with scalp comfort.

What’s the role of ingredients like cashmere proteins?
Hydrabond RX, our unique cashmere amino acid complex, is central to our formulas. These proteins closely mirror the structure of human hair, allowing them to penetrate deeply, repair damage, and restore flexibility, improving the hair from within, not just on the surface.
