Hey Bryn...

Trending Now

What hair colour trends are your clients asking for most right now?
Clients are leaning into softer, more natural tones that enhance their features rather than overpower them. Teddy bear browns (aka Daisy Edgar-Jones), mousey chic brunettes and wearable golden blondes are always popular. There’s also a strong focus on versatility, colours that grow out well, suit multiple face shapes and don’t demand constant upkeep, although we are seeing a renewed confidence in brighter blondes for clients who are happy to maintain it properly.

Which colour trend do you think will dominate this season?
Healthy, dimensional colour will dominate, whether that’s warm brunettes with subtle lightness through the mid-lengths or blondes that feel luminous rather than over-processed.

Which celebrity hair colour are you currently loving, and why?
I’m less inspired by traditional celebrities and more by the modern ‘girl or guy next door’ seen on Instagram and TikTok. Effortless, well-coloured hair that looks lived-in, healthy and wearable always feels more relevant.

What’s the biggest shift you’ve noticed in how clients want their hair to look or feel right now?
There’s a huge shift towards hair health. Clients want their colour to look beautiful but also feel strong, glossy and long-lasting.

Who or what is inspiring you most right now—celebs, runways, TikTok, clients?
Clients are the biggest inspiration. Real people with real lifestyles drive the most interesting colour choices.

What’s a low-effort colour trend that still looks high-impact?
Glosses and demi-permanent colours that enhance tone and shine with minimal commitment.

Colour Specific

What colour service do you think delivers the most impact with the least maintenance?
A combination of highlights and balayage for brightness with soft regrowth.

What colour trend works best for enhancing natural hair health and shine?
Glosses and demi-permanent colours are ideal for enhancing natural hair because they're low-commitment and condition-focused.

A gloss is typically an ammonia-free, deposit-only colour that sits on or just inside the hair cuticle. It refines tone -  neutralising brassiness in blondes or adding warmth/richness to brunettes, and dramatically increases shine. Because it doesn’t lift the hair, it doesn’t compromise the structure.

Demi-permanent colour works similarly but can penetrate slightly deeper into the hair. It blends greys softly, enhances natural depth and gives a more dimensional result without the commitment of permanent colour.

They usually last between 4–6 weeks depending on the client’s hair type and homecare. They fade gradually and naturally, which makes them perfect for clients wanting healthy-looking colour without strong regrowth lines.

It’s one of the best ways to refresh colour between major appointments while maintaining condition.

What advice or tips do you offer to maintain your colour for longer?
Focus on hair health: pre-wash treatments, correct shampoo, conditioner and heat protection.

Healthy Hair Tips

Why do you think hair health is becoming such a priority for clients right now?
Clients are far more educated about ingredients, damage and long-term hair integrity. Social media has made people aware of over-processing, breakage and poor at-home habits. There’s also a shift towards investing in fewer, better services, so clients want colour that looks expensive, glossy and strong rather than dry or overworked. Healthy hair simply holds colour better and reflects more light, which makes it look more premium.

What’s the most common mistake you see clients making with their hair colour at home?
Over-washing and using harsh shampoos. Many people are unknowingly stripping their toner or gloss within the first few weeks. Another mistake is skipping heat protection, especially with daily styling. This will fade colour and weaken lightened hair.

If someone wants better hair colour long-term, what’s the first thing you’d tell them to focus on?
Consistency. A proper routine: pre-wash treatment, sulphate-free or high quality shampoo cleansing , the appropriate conditioner and heat protection. If the canvas is healthy, the colour will always look better and last longer.

Product Know-how

Which Van Clarke product is your personal must-have, and how do you use it?
For me, it’s Thicker Quicker. It allows me to create volume in my hair without having to put a product in my hand…literally spray and use gentle heat from a dryer to lift hair from the root. Perfect volume that lasts!

Is there a Van Clarke product you recommend to almost every client, regardless of hair type?
LifeSaver Sun Leave-in Treatment, not just for holidays! It’s so easy to use, supports a healthy hair routine and gives gorgeous beachy vibes, even in the city. Hair is protected and the result is naturally styled hair.

What’s your go-to product for maintaining a colour between salon visits?
UV Protective Shampoo and Conditioner as it helps colour to stay vibrant for longer, and ensures you’re protected from the UV rays and city pollution. Pollution causes your colour to fade and dull, especially for blondes. We want hair to stay vibrant and fresh until the next salon appointment.

The Quick Cut

Current hair crush:
I love Hailey Bieber’s soft, expensive brunette. The tone is neutral-warm, incredibly glossy and always looks healthy rather than overly styled. It’s wearable but still polished which feels very aligned with the Van Clarke aesthetic.

Favourite cut right now:
Sadie Sink a.k.a Max from Stranger Things - her glow-up is the perfect example of personality-led hair. From understated to softly layered, richer and more confident.

Favourite colour trend:
Teddy Bear Brown.

Go-to Van Clarke product:
LifeSaver Ultra Pre-wash Treatment.

One hair rule you never break:
Towel dry hair a little before applying conditioner…because dripping wet, the water dilutes the product.

Finishing Touches

What’s one piece of advice you wish every client would follow at home?
Remember that different lighting always affects how you see your hair colour e.g. warm light will make your hair colour look warmer.

If you could describe the ‘Van Clarke hair look’ in three words, what would they be?
90’s Jennifer Anniston.

Thanks so much Bryn.

Professionally, I wouldn't touch 99% of the hairbrushes for sale on the market. I don't know what goes on inside big companies. One might make plastic household items like bowls and bins, and maybe someone thinks, “Hey, let's make a mould for a hairbrush...
