Salon Spotlight: Why Does Hair Go Frizzy in Summer?

Summer should be the season of effortless hair, mermaid waves and sun kissed highlights, but for many people it's when frizz becomes most noticeable. Whether it's a halo of flyaways, curls that lose definition or hair that doubles in size the moment you step outside, warmer weather can create challenges that seem impossible to control.

We sat down with Mitchell Scott and asked him to explain why frizz happens and what are his key tips to help keep hair smooth.

Hey Mitchell...

Why does hair suddenly seem frizzier in summer?
Summer creates the perfect storm for frizz. Higher temperatures, stronger UV rays, chlorine, sea water and changing humidity levels all place stress on the hair. As the hair becomes dehydrated from sun exposure, it starts searching for moisture elsewhere.

When humidity rises, it absorbs water from the air unevenly, causing the hair shaft to swell and lose its smooth appearance. The result is hair that feels rougher, looks less polished and becomes much harder to style.

Is frizz always caused by humidity?
Humidity certainly plays a role, but hair that has been coloured, heat-styled or exposed to environmental damage will often become more porous over time. This means the protective outer layer is less compact, making it easier for moisture to move in and out of the hair. The condition of the hair is often just as important as the climate itself.

What's the biggest mistake people make when trying to combat frizz?
Most people focus only on styling products. But if the hair lacks strength, elasticity and
hydration internally, no amount of finishing product will completely solve the problem. You may smooth the surface temporarily, but the underlying causes remain.

That's why I recommend my clients start with a weekly LifeSaver Pre-wash Treatment.

Applied before shampooing, it helps replenish lost moisture and reinforce weakened areas of the hair using our Hydrabond Rx™ complex and cashmere proteins. Over time, the hair becomes softer, more resilient and far easier to manage, even in warmer weather.

Which products should be part of a summer anti-frizz routine?

Protection is essential during the warmer months. LifeSaver Sun Leave-in Styling Treatment was developed by Michael to help shield the hair from UV exposure while maintaining softness and hydration. It's ideal whether you're commuting through the city, sitting in the garden or spending time by the sea. I use it myself for styling my hair.

When blow-drying, Eureka Blowdry Balm will help to create a smoother finish while
protecting the hair during heat styling.

It’s lightweight, reduces flyaways, improves shine and maintain a polished look without heaviness. It’s our salon must-have! Combined together, these two products will help protect the hair from the daily stresses that often trigger frizz.

Can you achieve volume without creating more frizz?
Absolutely. One of the biggest misconceptions is that smooth hair has to be flat. Our Volumising Mousse creates natural body and movement while maintaining control.

Applied at the roots before blow-drying, it helps support lift without the rough texture or stickiness that some volumising products can leave behind.

I tell clients that the secret is building structure into the style rather than relying on excessive heat.

What's your favourite professional trick for taming frizz instantly?
A tiny amount of the right finishing product can completely transform the look of the hair. Magic Oil is great for smoothing flyaways, adding light reflection and enhancing definition without leaving the hair greasy or coated, because its silicone-free.

But I always say to start with the smallest amount possible, warm it between the palms of your hands and focus on the mid-lengths and ends. It really creates that polished, expensive-looking finish people often associate with salon blow-dry!

What if frizz is a constant problem, regardless of the weather?
If you spend every morning battling with straighteners then a salon treatment may be the answer. Our Hyrolox™ Hair Treatment helps smooth the hair and reduce unwanted volume by gently reshaping the hair's structure. This makes the hair easier to blow-dry, easier to style and far less reactive to humidity.

Unlike some smoothing treatments that can leave hair flat or poker straight, Hyrolox™ is designed to maintain natural movement and body. Hair still looks like your hair, just smoother, shinier and significantly more manageable.

Many clients find they spend less time styling, use less heat and enjoy frizz-free results for months rather than days.

Final Word

Frizz isn't usually a styling problem, it's a hair health problem. The better condition your hair is in, the easier it becomes to style, manage and enjoy. Focus on protection, prevention and consistency, and your hair will reward you for it.

Thanks Mitchell
