At Michael Van Clarke, beauty is approached holistically and we recently welcomed Helen Marie, known as The Sculptress, to the salon, where she perfectly embodies that philosophy. Specialising in luxury lymphatic facial massage, Helen Marie’s bespoke treatments are designed to sculpt, lift and restore the face naturally, working far deeper than the surface of the skin. Combining precise anatomical knowledge with intuitive touch, she releases stored tension, supports lymphatic drainage and rebalances the nervous system, creating a visibly lifted, contoured effect without injectables. Her work not only enhances facial definition but also relieves TMJ, jaw clenching and stress-related blockages, offering clients both aesthetic refinement and profound relaxation.
For those new to your work, how would you describe the treatment you offer at Michael Van Clarke?
The treatment I offer is designed to gently ‘rewind’ the face, releasing years of built-up tension and restoring what has been gradually lost over time. Through precise, targeted techniques, I work to drain stagnation, soften tight muscles and reawaken the natural structure of the face.

As this tension is released, the face begins to lift, contour and open, revealing a fresher, more defined and naturally youthful appearance that has often been hidden beneath the surface. It’s both a physical and emotional reset, leaving clients not only looking revitalised, but feeling lighter, clearer and deeply restored.
You’re known for creating a natural ‘facelift’ effect. What physically changes in the face during a treatment?
What many people don’t realise is that the face contains over 40 muscles, an intricate network that plays a significant role in both our appearance and how we hold tension. Over time, stress and habitual expression can cause these muscles to tighten, leading to stagnation, puffiness and a loss of definition.
Through precise, targeted techniques, I work to release this muscular tension and clear areas of congestion. This stimulates circulation, encourages collagen production and supports lymphatic drainage, allowing trapped fluid to move efficiently through the system. The result is a visible reduction in puffiness, improved skin tone and a naturally healthy, lifted glow.
I combine warm compresses with cooling tools to soften and relax the muscles before sculpting. Once the lymphatic system has been gently activated and drained, I can more effectively lift, contour and redefine the face, creating that signature sculpted, yet entirely natural ‘facelift’ effect.
How does lymphatic facial massage actually work beneath the surface of the skin?
Beneath the surface of the skin lies a complex network of lymphatic fluid, vessels and nodes that play a vital role in removing waste and maintaining balance within the body. Through gentle, precise massage, we stimulate this system, encouraging the movement of fluid, the drainage of toxins and the removal of cellular waste that can build up over time.
By activating both the lymphatic system and the underlying facial muscles, circulation is improved and the skin is better nourished from within. This results in a clearer, more refined complexion, reduced puffiness and a visible sense of vitality, supporting healthier skin both internally and externally.
Many clients are looking for alternatives or complements to injectables. How can your treatment help reduce the need for Botox or fillers?
Much of what we associate with ageing is actually the result of tension held within the fascia, the connective tissue that supports the face. When this tension builds, the fascia can become dehydrated and restricted, leading to dullness, crepiness and a heaviness that impacts both how the skin looks and how it feels.
My approach focuses on releasing this underlying tension rather than masking it. Through targeted massage and lymphatic work, we soften tight areas, restore movement and improve circulation, allowing the skin to appear brighter, more lifted and naturally revitalised.
There is absolutely a place for injectables when used thoughtfully, but they shouldn’t be seen as a cure. The body holds tension for a reason, and by addressing and releasing it, we can often achieve a more balanced, long-term result. In many ways, it’s no different to how we would treat tension elsewhere in the body, we wouldn’t ignore the root cause, we would work to relieve it. The face responds in exactly the same way.
You also work with clients who suffer from TMJ and jaw clenching. How does facial sculpting support this?
Bruxism and jaw clenching place significant strain on the muscles of the face, often leading to fatigue, heaviness and a constant sense of tension. Facial sculpting works to gently release this build-up, restoring softness and movement to the affected areas.
By targeting the jaw, neck and surrounding structures, we ease muscular tightness and improve circulation, bringing a sense of physical relief as well as visible refinement in the face. What many clients don’t expect is the emotional shift, releasing this tension often creates a feeling of lightness and clarity, as though a weight has been lifted.
Clients frequently describe feeling more relaxed, open and ‘free’ for days, sometimes weeks, after treatment. It’s a powerful reminder that when we release what the body is holding onto, we not only look better — we feel better too.
What happens to the body when there is lymphatic blockage or muscular tension left unresolved?
The lymphatic system relies on movement, it doesn’t have its own internal pump, so when it’s not supported, stagnation can begin to build.
Over time, this can lead to a visible and physical sense of congestion within the body. In the face, this often presents as puffiness, dullness, breakouts and a loss of clarity in the skin. Internally, clients may experience symptoms such as fatigue or brain fog, as waste and fluid are not being efficiently cleared. Muscular tension further compounds this, creating pressure within the tissue that can feel tender or sore.
When left unresolved, this build-up affects not only how we look, but how we feel. By restoring movement and flow within the lymphatic system and releasing tension in the muscles, we can relieve this congestion, allowing the skin and body to return to a more balanced, energised state.
What kind of results can clients expect after one treatment and how do results build over time?
Every client experiences an immediate ‘glow-up’, circulation is stimulated, stagnation begins to drain and the muscles soften, creating a more lifted and contoured appearance. While results are visible straight away, they often peak around two days later, as the body continues to flush away the waste that was contributing to puffiness and congestion. For this reason, I always recommend that bridal clients book their treatment one to two days before their event, rather than on the day itself.
Supporting the body post-treatment can enhance and prolong the results. A clean diet, low in sodium and free from sugar or gut irritants, alongside allowing time for rest and recovery, helps the body continue its natural detoxifying process.
Results typically last between three to ten days, though clients who incorporate the treatment into a regular self-care routine often find the effects last up to two to three weeks. With consistent monthly treatments, the results become more sustained, maintaining not only the sculpted appearance, but the overall sense of lightness and wellbeing that comes with it.

What is your ultimate aim for clients when they leave your treatment room?
I love this question. My aim is for every client to leave feeling the way I did the first time I truly released years of tension and held emotion from my own face. There’s a visible shift, confidence grows, the skin glows and it’s incredibly rewarding to witness that transformation in someone who has trusted you so deeply.
My goal is for every woman I treat to feel lighter, both physically and emotionally, and to leave looking like the very best version of herself. There is so much pressure to look “younger”, but for me, it’s not about reversing age, it’s about removing what doesn’t belong there: the tension, the stagnation, the emotional weight that has become physical and visible.
If I can help release even a part of that, even temporarily, and allow someone to feel more confident, to look in the mirror and truly smile at themselves, then I know I’ve done something meaningful.
The most common area clients hold tension?
Neck, shoulders, The jaw, zygomatic arch.
Biggest myth about facial massage:
That facial massage “detoxes” the skin by removing toxins. In reality the body’s detoxification processes are handled by organs such as the liver and kidneys.
What facial massage does do, very effectively, is support the lymphatic system. Through precise, gentle techniques, it encourages the movement of lymphatic fluid, helping to clear waste, excess proteins and retained fluid from the tissues. It also helps calm inflammation and rehydrate the fascia, creating a clearer, more balanced and visibly healthier complexion.
How often should someone book for lasting results?
I generally recommend treatments every 4 to 6 weeks for lasting, visible results. However, for clients who are committed to maintaining their skin between appointments, incorporating practices such as gua sha, skin rolling or gentle facial massage three to four times a week, fewer, well-spaced treatments throughout the year can be just as effective.
Consistency is key, and with the right balance of in-salon care and at-home rituals, the face can be maintained to look and feel its best.
One sign your lymphatic system may be sluggish?
Puffiness. If you’re puffy, things aren’t moving as they should & the body is screaming for a flush.
