In the Chair - Real People Real Hair - Madeleine

Sometimes you can’t quite put your finger on it. You put a lot of styling effort in, and it may be okay, but then doesn’t last or make you feel uplifted for long. It lacks something….. a vibrancy, a bounce. It all just feels a bit flat. You resign yourself to thinking you have bad hair, not like all the models you see in the media.

The truth is, most people end up thinking they weren’t dealt the best hand when it comes to hair, and wish they had someone else’s. But really, most just haven’t experienced a great haircut or understand the products and easy techniques to get the best from their hair. Hair shouldn’t be hard work for you. Unfortunately, the harder you work a bad haircut the more you damage the hair and hence the harder you have to work it. It’s a vicious spiral down to thin broken frizzy hair, and it stops with a great haircut. That’s what we do.

1. The haircut

The cut is the most important part of your hairstyle and should do most of the work. When it’s cut well, your hair comes alive and is easy to manage, always wanting to return to its flattering sculpted shape, naturally and effortlessly.

Madeleine’s haircut was typical of the corrective work I do for new clients. It had a poor outline with a thinned out step layer, making the hair hang heavy and lank. It was very thin and broken at the ends from Madeleine trying to overstyle this poor haircut. Using our Diamond Dry Cut™ method, I kept the length but reshaped throughout to create give proper balanced layers, so the front sides and back all connected properly and moved in unison. This gives the free-flowing effect that makes long hair look vibrant and attractive.

2. The colour

Jodie our Colour Director, did an amazing job of balancing out the colour and introducing contrast with warmer and lighter lowlights, then followed with a warm rich vegetable toner.

3. The condition

We gave Madeleine our deeply hydrating and protective treatment. Nothing restores and maintains hair health quite like LifeSaver Pre-wash Treatment, as the thousands of testimonials from here to Australia verify.

Michael thrilled me by not only taking my hair from grim to glossy, but also by taking the time to plan a hair health trajectory that means I won’t have to constantly whack colour on and cut it to get rid of dead ends.

His approach: sustainable hair health, rather than loads of effort when styling to make dead, lifeless hair look good. It’s a way of looking at hair that absolutely chimes with how I view beauty; quick wins (bar lipstick, which is so transformative in an instant) usually come with a price.

We agreed on a grey strategy, too: I’m allowing some in order to have healthier hair overall, which will also mean the greys aren’t wiry, don’t stand out so much. Am embracing it because really, I am not willing to colour my hair all the time to get to a zero-grey place. I’d rather just have shiny hair that looks well cared for, whatever my age.” - Madeleine

For Madeleine's hair we used LifeSaver Prewash Treatment to rehydrate, then Cashmere Protein UV Protective Shampoo and Conditioner. A little Thicker Quicker gave texture and lift to the roots, then LifeSaver UV mixed with Volumising Mousse helped smooth the hair, give heat protection, body and control. We used the Large Round Brush (soft bristle) to smooth. Then finally a little Ten Second Transformation to feed and smooth the hair giving a little shine and texture too.

Michael planted more herbs on our roof garden and the basil went wild. Harvesting for the salon Deli and giving to friends still left a verdant surplus. Hence my recipe this week which made a small dent in supplies.

Flat, straight and heavy. Sharon’s hair had been cut so short at the back and with no proper layering. The exaggerated long front then conspired to drag the whole look down. The very opposite of uplifting and energising which is what hair should do for the wearer...

It’s been a long time since the first Brazilian Blowdry products were being used. The few people that supplied these unbranded products here in the late 1990s worked in the shadows like drug dealers distributing hooch from the cottage industry of stills in the jungle and favelas.
